The Dairying Industry.
At thß ceremony of opening the new ! Eureka Butter Factory, Mr Greenslade, M.P., in the course of his remarks, heartily congratulated the company on the splendid building and plant which they had secured to replace that which they had lost by misfortune. Thi3 was J a matter in which all were interested—he was speaking as a milk supplier as well as a member of Parliament. He recognised that the welfare of the Upper and Lower Waikato and Thames Valley depended mainly upon the dairy industry. This being so, it was everbody’s duty to take an interest and endeavour to forward an industry upon which so much depended. The speaker quoted figures showing the great advance which dairying had made during the past five years, and said how much greater this would have been had proper attention been devoted to opening up the native lands. As it was, the output had doubled since 1906. As regards excessive moisture in butter ana recent proceedings against a company, he did not consider that the Agricultural Department had been unduly severe. It was of the utmost importance that the character of New Zealand butter should be maintained—it should be kept on a level with Danish at the very least. Exporters had been warned more than eighteen months back that proceedings would be taken against offenders in the matter of moisture. He felt proud at being asked to inaugurate such a building and plant as had been erected in place of that which had been destroyed by fire, and be heartily congratulated the settlers. They had a building which was a credit to the district, and which had cost £2,200.
