Volunteer Notes.
The Piako Mounted Rifles is well officered at the present time. There is no useless “frill” and gold braid about them. They are men who know their work, capable of imparting it to those under them, and, if occasion fshould should arise do their duty on the battlefield.
On J|ine 16th 40 United States cadets will arrive in Sydney, to make a tour of Australia, and will subsequently visit New Zealand. Preparations for the visit have been made by the Department of Defence, and the State Cammandants have been notified by the Minister, who has written to the Secretary of the Westralian Young Australian League the chief mover in the arrangements, offering to give every assistance to make the trip successful and pleasant. The American team will be allowed to use their own pattern of rifle in matches. Permission for the team to land with arms will be arranged, for the lads are between 11 and 19 years of age. The visitors will probably return about October.
