LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Mr H. Jackson begs to notify the residents of Te Aroha and surrounding districts, that he has been appointed an agent for the New Zealand Herald and Auckland Weekly News.—Advt. Tenders are invited by the Hungahunga Drainage Board for certain drainage works. Tenders close on Saturday, March 6th. Besidents of the Gordon and Manas warn districts are reminded of the fact that Presbyterian Church service will be held on Sunday next. On Sunday night, in the Te Aroha Presbyterian Church the Eev. W. Blair will preach. Subject: “Under which ruler ?” All men are invited. A special meeting of the Te Aroha School Committee is called for tomorrow (Friday) evening at 8 o’clock. At St. Mark’s, Te Aroha, and St. Matthew’s, Morrinsville, Special Service in thanksgiving for Harvest blessings will be held on Sunday, prox. Mr H. Eyre Kenny, S.M. at Nelson ha 8 received intimation (says a Press Association telegram) that he will be retired from the service on superannuatioa as from March 31. The Secretary of the Te Aroha Jockey Club notify that the Summer Meeting will be held on Monday (Miners’ Union Day) and Tuesday, March Ist and 2nd. Acceptances close at 8 p.m.. on Wednesday, February 24. Applications for bookmakers’ licenses close on Friday February 26th. The Hamilton Band will be present on both days. There is some talk of holding a Bmd Contest at Te Aroha early next year. Outside Bands, we understand, "have expressed themselves as only too willing to pay a visit to this popular sanatorium. If the contest is to take place something more than talking will have to be done—those interested must act at once—there is no time to lose. So rigid are the regulations to prevent the introduction of cattle disease into Canada, that a funeral procession was stopped at the international boundary at Niagara Falls recently, and horses and vehicles from the Canadian side were substituted for the remainder of the journey. The Borough foreman (Mr P. Pilkington) and staff are taking advantage of the spell of fino weather and tarring and sanding the main and side streets. Should the Borough continue its work of progress, it is only a question of a year or so and the whole of the streets and water-tables will be in a thoroughly up-to-date state. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., hav! been favou ed with instructions from Messrs L imey Bros , of Waihou, who have sold th *ir farm, to sell the whole of their stock, plant, etc., on Tuesday, February 23rd. The stock are well worth inspection and the implements, etc , are all practically new. A large number of sheep, consisting of some very nice lines, will be offered at tb : B sale, and should meet with some good competition an ongst. buyers. It has been arrangt d that a conveyance will meet the trains arriving at Waihou at 11.40 a.m., and the 1.15 p.m., from Thames and Waikato respectively, returning to Te Aroha after the sale. The sale commences at noon with the sundries and the live stock at 1.30 p.m. Luncheon will he provided. For full particulars see advt. in another column. To-morrow evening at the Methodist Church, Te Aroha, the Rev. J. Dubes will deal with the very important subject of “ Parental Responsibility.”

In connection with the Witikato Central Show Mr Geo. Shirley, of Sydney, is offerin'? through his agents. Messrs G. E. Clark anil Sous, two cash prizes of two and a-half. guineas each for class 132 (fat heifer, two years old) and class 184 (English Leicester Ram, over 21 months). We have also been requested to say that the Association find free paddocking and green feed for exhibition stock coming from a distance.

| We have been shown a splendid sample of the saddle maker’s art at Tom Donovan’s. This particular saddle has been made to the order of Mr Burke, and we must say we envy him his pigskin. It j will bo on view for a few days only. | We wish to direct the attention of readers to a slight error in our report on “ Murphy's Find.” Instead of stating that Sir George Gray obtained permission from Parliament for Mr Murphy to have assistance to prospect the Ohineinuri district we should have said to prospect the Te Aroha district. We draw the special attention of our readers to Mr Tom Donovan’s startling re-place advertisement in his usual space I in this issue. I Mr G°o. tSrnallman has resigned the p sition of Postmaster at Mangaiti and th“ office his been removed to the residence of Mr & Mis Charles Mace, near the I school. Mrs Mace who is now in charge i has had a deal of experience in that line ‘ having been post mistress in Waitekauri during the mining boom. We consider the Department is fortunate in placing their Mangaiti office in such good hands

We understand that a syndicate is about to be formed to start an early morning market at Te Aroha, and that negotiations are now in progress for the purpose of a large stand, centrally situated, for this purpose. If this idea is c »rried out the thorough benefit to the farmer is easily understood, An excellent programme comprising some 19 events has been arranged for the Waihou Athletic Club’s annual sports to be held in Mr Glynn Lewis’ paddock on Monday, April 12. No less than £6O will be given away in prize money. A first-class Band will be in attendance. Excursion trains will arrive from all directions. Mr T. D. Rice is the energetic secretary. The Clean Sweep is now on.
