Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1909 ADVANCE TE AROHA.

This above all—to thine oton self be true, And it must follow as the night the day Thou canst not then be false to any man Shakespeare.

Our readers may have noticed that in a recent local we referred to a statement made by a visitor familiar with To Aroha, to the effect that our town is certainly seeming to be more stirring now than was the case even a year ago. This comes simply as a corroboration of what we have ourselves said more than once. Te Aroha is going ahead The Government has from time to time given us marked proofs of con fidence, in the various grants which it has made to carry into effect proposed work in the domain. Take the new tennis court: some time ago the Nkws ventilated the question of this new court. It is really needed, for the present court is too rough for the players on account of the willow roots pushing up through the asphalt. The Government responded to our suggestion and granted the money to lay out the new court. The ground upon which it is laid out is really not suitable for any other purpose, as it is a sulphur patch upon which nothing will grow, but of course the tar and sand will suffer no detriment from contact with the sulphur. Another sign of Government confidence is the building of the new <

kiosk. This pretty tea-house is beautifully situated, overlooking a lovely view. Below it Mr Dalton is intending to to lay out a spacious rose bed. This bed will occupy the space of clay ground which lies to the left as one ascends the flower bordered path to the kiosk. Mr Dalton is now preparing this clay patch, ventilating and mixing in turf from the tennis court to make it thoroughly sweet and suitable. The new piece of ti-tree trellising which ajoins the present bush-house Mr Dalton intends to overgrow with roses. He intends further to encompass the rose garden on its far side with a serpentine walk bordered with a wide grass marge, and completely over arched with a rose covered trellis, so that the stroller in the domain will approach the kiosk through a perfect bower of beauty, for path, border and all will be walled in and over-arched with roses. The pond to the outer side of this proposed walk is already floored with cement, and partially walled in with boulders. It contains springs, and is to be ornamented with gold fish and water lilies, and bordered with arums and bamboo. The News has made a cmtribution of one hundred of the best rose plants toward the realisation of this scheme of the rose garden, believing that it is the privilege of Te Arohans to help on the advancement of the town as much as they can individually, and that local enterprise will do a good deal toward realising the possibilities of our pretty resort. There is still another scheme which Mr Dalton keeps in mind, namely the beautifying of the un* sightly corner beside No 15 pump. We have previously spoken of Mr Dalton’s idea of having a cascade coming down the face of the cliff in the corner where that brown, unsightly iron spring trickles down. Mr Dalton proposes to erect here also a bush-liouse, similar to the one by the swimming bath, and to have an approach covered in with a trellis adorned with climbers.

We really want also a glass house for the raising of seedlings. This is a thing which we may perhaps achieve by-and-bye. For there is no doubt that we have, in the very position our domain, being situated at the foot of the mountain, factors for producing effects which do not belong to level ground. And our domain will yet become one of the conspicuous beauty spots of Australasia.
