Volunteer Notes.

i There is some likelihood of the i Easter manoeuvres in connection 1 with the Auckland district being held at Morrinsville. Captain Carpenter paid a. visit of inspection and looked out the most suitable ! place. Te Aroha was also visited, ! and from what we can gather the ' Staff Officer who inspected the site 'near the new rifle range is very favourably impressed with it as a camping ground. There is plenty of fresh water and shelter with plenty of suitable country for mounted work. The Piako Mounted Rifles keeps up its numerical strength remarkably well. For the present Volun- ! teer year, which terminates at the end of the present month, the corps will capitate 63 men. As the capitation allowance is £3 10s per man, the Government cheque will doubtless be very acceptable by the Company. Members who fail to earn ' capitation render themselves liable to the corps for the full amount of their capitation. On the 20th March the handsome “ Starkey Cup ” will be fired for at Morrinsville, the conditions of which have appeared in these columns. A gold medal will be presented to each of the winning four. Trooper Horne, the winner of the first competition for the “ Pilling Shield ” is also to be presented with a gold medal. The annual meeting of the P.M.R. will take place early next month. The P.M.R. intend holding a “ trek camp ” this year, commencing at Morrinville, on Saturday, June sth, trekking to Cambridge, Te Awamutu, and back to Hamilton, at which place a Regimental Ball will be held on the Friday evening, returning home on Saturday. The election of a Captain of the Piako Mounted Rifles will take place at Morrinsville on Saturday, June sth.

Very little rifle shooting has been by members of the P.M.R during the past few months. As most of the troops are farmers, and consequently working at high pressure the harvesting and milking season, rifle shooting is out of the question at the present time.
