Mangaiti School Picnic.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
The residents of Mangaiti have every reason to be well satisfied with, the unqualified success that attended their united efforts in carrying out the third Anniversary Picuic yesterday afternoon. The weather—on which a great deal depends—was all that could be desired, although at times it looked somewhat threatening. Close on 300 people left Te Aroha by the , 1.30 train, in fact the stationmaster sold right out of tickets, however he arranged that none were left behind, by the 3.30 train a further complement made their way towards the picnic grounds. Many rode, drove and ’cycled towards the little schoolhouse situated on rising ground about half -a - mile below the Mangaiti railway station. The school flag was flying in honour of the event, and visitors as they entered the grounds were given a hearty welcome, and all were made feel at home. In order to provide shelter from the sun’s rays an awning was arranged along the western side of the grounds. A plentiful supply of provisions were handed round, by an army of willing helpers. Sports and games of all sorts were indulged in, many of which created no end of amusement. The tug-of-war proved the chief attraction amongst the “ grown-ups,” and some long and strong pulls took place. The Mangaiti ladies v. Allcomers, proved an easy victory for the former in each instance. Prior to the departure of the train for home hearty cheers were given for the Mangaiti residents. Great credit is due to Mr Chas. Mace (lion secretary), and the Committee of Management.
During the afternoon Mr Poland, M.P., was waited upon by a number of Mangaiti residents, asking him to use his best endeavours towards having the Post Office retained in the district, and suggesting that a surfaceman’s or platelayer’s cottage be erected in which the Post Office work might be carried out, Mr Poland promises to accede to the request, and the deputation thanked Mr Poland and withdrew.
