Opening of the Tennis Season at Morrinsville.

Wednesday last, -Labour Day, being a Public Holiday, local e thusiasts to the number of 20 journeyed over to Morrins ville to assist at the opening of the 1t" >• tennis season. They had intended driving over in oue of Messrs Johnson ami Gwitlim’s conveyances, but owing to the threatening weather decided to go bj the 11. 40. a. m. train. They were inel at the playing grounds by the Secretary, of the Morrins.ville club an ideal official who explained the order of events. Among those present was a visitor from the Matamata tennis Club, and had the weather been fine other local clubs would have been represented. There were some 50 persons present. Shortly after 2p.m. the Vice-President, MrF. Marshall, in the absence of the President, Dr Seville, welcomedjdie visitors on b half of bis club. In a neat ltttle speech he wished the club success in the ensuing season, and hoped their games would always be pi iyed in the same frieudb spirit as in the past. He then called on Mrs Seville to serve the first ball. The weather was ideal for tennis, being sunny, with a mice refreshing breeze. The following games were] played:— Messrs Bryors and Maingay v. MessrPayze and Jordon, 6—4. Miss Layne and Mr Seocombe v Miss Maingay and Mr Gummcr, 6—4 Miss Huut and Mr F. W. Harris v. Miss Stall!ey and Mr iHogg, 3 —9. Miss C. Brownlee and Mr Jordm v Miss Gavin and Mr Cimpbdl, 4 4. So well were the 1 >cal nlayers treated that they seemed unable to tea,r themselves away and when the “'wildcat left, one lady member had a run of 200 yards to catch it, but so fist was the train travelling, that she just managed to get aboard, and gave her friends a thrill by slipping when clambering aboard. Willing hands, however , were stretched out to help her, and when the roll was called they were found to be all present. The travelling arrangements were in the capable hands of the local secretary, Mr R. B. Seccombe.
