Auckland to Wellington.
The following letter, which explains itself, has just been received from the General Manager for Railways, by the Rev. John Dukes, of Te Aroha :
“ With reference to your letter of 18th ultimo addressed to the Right Hon. tho Prime Minister in regard to the proposed through express service between Auckland and Wellington, I have the honor bj r direction of the Minister for Railways, to whom your letter has been referred, to inform you that the timetable must be arranged in the interests of the Dominion generally and not in the interests of any particular district or districts, and local interests have to bo ignored in favour of a suitable through connection between l uckland and Invercarg’ll. The departure time of the trains from the various centres is governed to a great extent by the necessity of making a suitable connection witli the ferry steamers between Lyttelton and Wellington. After giving the matter every consideration the Minister regrets that he cannot see his way to adopt your suggestions, but he desires me to point out that suitable auxiliary trains will be provided in the various districts and that the p’esent express services such as that between Auckland and Potorua will enable tourists and othex-s to visit the districts referred to by you and to view the scenery cn route.”
