Social Evening.
A most enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mrs Jefferson on Monday evening last, when about 40 devotees of that most fascinating of modern card games—bridge—sat down in the pretty and spacious drawing-room, which was tastefully decorated, to indulge in their favourrite pastime of solving the intricacies of “ No Trumps ” “ Hearts ” , “ Grand Slams ” etc.
Many charmingly pretty frocks were in evidence,- and some most artistically dressed coiffures, but the subtleties of feminine drapery are too much for mere man’s descriptive powers. Play stepped at 11 p. m. when the score sheet registered Mrs Burton and Miss Holden and Mr Wigg and Mr Burton as the respective winners of the Ist and 2nd ladies’ and gentlemen’s prizes. Mrs Burton received a handsome belique-ware vase, and Miss Holden a volume of Browing’s poems, whilst Mr Wigg received a pretty framed picture of “ Love’s Awakening ” and Mr Burton a volume of one of Dickens’ immortal works.
The supper-room was then visited, and the prettily arranged tables, literally groaning under the weight of “ good things ” offered various temptations in the form of meringues delicious trifles, fruit salabs, - jellies etc. An adjournment from the supper room to the drawing room and the rendering of a few vocal items by Mrs McGirr, Dr. Kenny, Mr Binsted, and others, was a most successful termination to a delightful evening.
