Hungahanga Drainage Board.
A meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday in Mr Gilchrist’s office. There were present: Messrs Hanna (ohairmau), Orr, Waghom, Makgill. The engineer, Mr Otway, was also present. The principal business was in connection with the Waihekau. It was mentioned in connection with this work, Mr Laird had promised to pay half cost of construction, and widening to be such width as may be agreed upon, and half cost of maintaining thereafter ; and from settlers below Bell’s to Waitoa river, half interest on cost for widening and half-yearly cost of maintenance. It was thought that settlers should agree when called upon by the Board to allow these terms to be registered on title. In connection with O’Brien’s drain it was resolved to allow him £1 per chain for 40 chains. At the request of the Waitoa settlers it was decided to draw up a petition asking the Government for a grant to snag the Waitoa river from a point down the river to the Waharoa end of the boundary at Matamata. Owing te the unsatisfactory way in which Laybourn and Stanley had acted in connection with their contracts, Mr Otway suggested that they be given no more contracts. It was the opinion of Mr Waghom and the engineer that something should be done this winter to No. 2 drain.
