Ladies’ Hockey Hatch.

1 WAIHOU THREE TE AROHA NIL.

The long-looked for match took place at Waihou yesterday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the Waihou Club by three goals to nil. As this was the first match the Te Aroha Club had taken part in, it was not to be expected that they would lower the colours of their opponents, who have been playingfor several seasons. Te Aroha was without the services of Miss Willis, full-back, and were thus greatly handicapped. From the start it was seen that they had practically no combination but as the game progressed the players began to feel more at home, and towards the finish they gave Waihou all they desired. A feature of Te Aroha’s play was the goal-keeping by Mrs Annan, who surprised everybody by the clever way she blocked the ball and got it safely away from the goal, and the Waihouites agree that it was the best exhibition of goalkeeping they had seen.

A great weakness of the Te Aroha ladies is their backing up a player, and time after time Miss Hare- on the left wing took the ball from one end of the field to the other, and certain scores were lost through lack of support. Of the forwards, it would be hard to single any special one out as they all worked hard, and compared very favourably with the Waihou vanguard, while the backs also did their best, but were greatly handicapped by want of combination. Taking the play all through, Te Aroha put up a good fight, and lasted the game out well. After a few games like yesterday we think they will be able to turn the tables on Waihou, as they will get more confidence in themselves, and they deserve every credit for the uphill fight they made. For Waihou, it would be hard to pick anyone out for special mention, and they carried too many guns for their opponents, as the combination they had won the game for them. Goals were scored by Misses Walker, Burk and M. Taylor. Mr, F. W. Wild satisfactorily carried out the duties of referee.

The following are the teams : Waihou : Goalkeeper, Miss Walker; fullbacks, Misses Cooper and Voysey; halves, Misses McKay, McCullough, J. Burk; left wing, Miss Voysey ; right wing, Miss Taylor (captain) ; forwards, Misses J. Walker, Taylor, and Cavanagh. Te Aroha: Goalkeeper, Mrs Annan; full-backs, Misses Ryan and Faes; halves, Misses O. Patterson, A. Hare and Jennings; left wing, Miss Hare; right wing, Miss Spooner (captain); forwards, Miss Garrett, Heathcote and McKenzie. We understand that arrangements are in hand for a return match at Te Aroha in three weeks time.
