Mr J. Wild’s tender was accepted for painting Mr W. Manson’s shop. Mr C. W. Berghofer notifies that he is prepared to buy good dairy butter in any quantity. One of the most useful things in the house is to be bought in Te Aroha at wholesale price, ask Johnson and Wigg.— Advt. Members of the Piako Mounted Rifles are notified that the Knock Belt will be fired for on August 3rd. Entries close on the Saturday previous. There was a verp good attendance at the social he:d last night in aid of the funds of S Mark’s Parish Hall, given by the Girls’ Guild, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The music was provided by the Te Aroha Trio, and extras were played by Misses Spence and Wittin. Mr Nash ably carried out the duties of MC. The next social will be held on August 7, and judging by the popularity of last social, there should again be a large attendance. Berghofer’s is the best place in Te Aroha for small goods of every descrip-tion-plain and fancy. —Advt. A return, moved for by Mr Fisher, was laid on the table of the House showing that during the period of ten years 1896-1905, the pea-rifle accounted for one homicide, seven accidents, and four suicides. The revolver was responsible for nine homicides, 14 accidents, and 91 suicides, whilst other fire arms a count for four homicides. 130 accidents, and 108 suicides. Thus for ten years the total number stands at 368. Mr Fisher is not at all satisfied with the accuracy of the figures, those showing only 11 mishaps with pea-rifles in ten ypars being to his mind, very wide of the mark. Some of the obstructions in the Piako river have 1 een removed by Messrs Brownlee and Jennings and navigation thus made safer. It is stated that it is theintention of the Government to have the Piako cleared of all obstiuctions and it is hoped that a suitable sum will be voted for the purpose. With the Goernraent, acquiring large areas of land and with the commencement by a vote of £6OOO for a comprehensive drainage scheme it is necessary that the river itself should he cleared as the obstructions from willows alone and the consequent concentration of water into a narrow space does much to cause a flood when the rainy weather sets in. The Premier announced in the House yesterday that he had arranged a weekly mail service with Sydney at a cost of £15,004. The in rease in the Auckland Harbour Board's revenue for the last six months was £5,454, nearly as much as the whole increase of last year. L. We have had our attention drawn to a couple of trout working their way up the creek by Mr Batten’s to spawn, and any person picking them out of the creek is liable to a fine. There was a good attendance of members at the Gymnasium Club on Tuesday night, and a good deal of useful exercises were gone through. Being an “ open night,” visitors were allowed to take part after the members had gone through their exercises. There was a large attendance at the Waihou horse sale yesterday, but the bidding was n®t too brisk and prices were on the low side. The stallion Merrie Lad brought 65 guineas, while Gallant Ben and Royal Tar were passed in at 83 and 100 guineas respectively.
