N.S.W. Parliament.

GENERAL ELECTION IN v AUGUST. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) SYDNEY, YesterdayThe Governor (Sir Harry Rawson) on Tuesday with the usual ceremonies. The Speech foreshadowed a general election in August. The only measures proposed to be dealt with during the present session were bills validating certain municipal loans and removing doubts regarding the operation of the Gaming and Betting Act, and authorising the improvement of the port of Newcastle. In the Legislative Assembly, the Premier, Mr J. H. Carruthers, is making a statement dealing with the financial position of the State. In the Legislative Assembly, Mr McGowan dealt critically with the immigration policy of the Government. He said he knew cases in which men lost their places because immigrants were offered work for less wages. Mr Carruthers, in reviewing the financial position of the State, said they had started the financial year with a cash credit, including public works and closer settlement funds, of £1,962,000. This could be operated without touching the Trust Fund, which, together with the surplus, amounted to five millions. He considered the position justified him in remitting taxation. io The Legislative Council adopted the Address-in-Reply.
