At the Kia Ora enquiry, John Morris, wheelman* questioned closely as to hi® 6wn sobriety and the chief officer’ 8, and warned of the punishment for perjury, denied that he had any conversation about the case, or that he had drunk anything. He denied he had said the chief officer was ofi the bridge for two hours while witness was at the wheel. Questioned as to the officer’s §tafe he said he might have had a glass or two, but was not under the influence of liquor. He could not account for the vessel’s position. WANGANUI, This Day An elderly man, John Blair, 69 years of age, met his death under peculiar circumstances. He was standing on a chair pruning fruit trees, when the chair gave way, and he fell on the knife severing the jugular vein, and dying in a few minutes.
