A GREAT SUCCESS. AROHA BOYS PRIZE- , ; WINNERS IN INDUSTRIAL ... .SECTIONS. (Bj Telegraph—Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, This Day. Fine weather favoured the opening of the Waikato Winter Show at Hamilton yesterday and there was a . large attendance of settlers and the general public representing all parts of the- province. The total entries. were 1,000, drawn from all the in* ' dustries of the Auckland district, and many from other parts of the colony. The dairy exhibits are very fine, all the factories in the Waikato competing, and the agricultural sections are well filled. To-day Mr E. Clifton, formerly Chief Inspector of.. Stock, for the Auckland province, was" presented .with an illuminated address by the -• Waikato A. and P. Association in recognition: of his services to the district during the show. Lectures will be delivered on various subjects by the Agricultural department’s experts. The exhibition remains open until Saturday. ..... Mr W. Chitty, Acting-President,
at three p.m. announced that His Worship the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr J. S. Bond would formally open the Show. . ' Mr Bond, who briefly outlined the . • history, of tHe movement‘leading up to the splendid function they were all taking part in that day, said it more than exceeded the anticipations of the promoters, and would become an established institution in the Wkikato. Mr C. Day, President of the Waikato A. and P. Association, also spoke, and congratulated the committee on their undoubted success. He some months ago thought a winter, show in the Waikato an im- ' - possibility, but gladly admitted today’s proceedings had proved otherwise. Apologies for absence were re- '' ceived from several public men, including the Mayor of Te Aroha, and chairman of Piako County Council. ; Inside Yhe large horse bazaar a gay and busy spectacle aneets the eye, and everyone was pleased with the sight.;' ' All those engaged in country pur : suits find material of interest in the Agricultural Department’s fine exhibits, under Mr Clifton, which is a special feature of the show, and experts in all that pertains to cultivation of soil,and its products there, give enquirers free information.In factory butter exhibits the Ambury and English’s Frankton factory secured a first prize. The poultry are occupying an important place in the show, and the different classes are well contested. In this connection the Waihi exhibitors are giving a good account of themselves. P. Hanson, of Auckland, won the North Island Championship with an Indian game cock, and H. A. Coates, Auckland, the North Island Champion with a Pekin drake (old). The home industries are among the finest exhibits seen in this part of the colony, and proved especially interesting to the ladies. , The trade exhibits are on an extensive scale, farm implements and g.eed fertilizers being well represented. Milling, sheep-shearing, and other machinery in motion is attracting considerable interest. During the evening proceedings were well attended, and enlivened with music. The usual side shows are providing lighter enjoyment. The Waikato court at the Christchurch exhibition was reproduced. To-day will be a very busy day at the show, _ as special traips running $ esdjr§i°n rates eome from different parts, with tickets available up to Monday next. _ Masters George and Bertie Batt, Tc Aroha, secured prizes in the industrial section.
