AUSTRALIA ON PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL. SYDNEY, Yesterday. The professionalism re football was severely criticised at a reception given to the Queensland team at the Town Hall. Mr Calvert, president of the New South Wales Rugby Union, said he saw some danger of the taint of all taints as regards football as a pro fessional game looming up, and he hoped that New South Wales and Queensland would resolutely set their faces against it. The moment pro-, fessionalism entered anything, behind it came that abominable thing, the gambling spirit, and that was a spirit they wanted to keep out of a good and manly game like football. Attorney-General Wade, referring to the damage professionalism caused in England, declared that the higher aspects of the game were entirely lost, and came to be a matter of having in one pocket a large amount of money, and in another a large amount of blue metal.
