A scheme of reconstruction of the New May Queen Company involving the important undertaking of testing the deep levels at Thames was approved by a meeting, the cost being estimated at from £19,000 to £29000. Government offered a subsidy for a suitable scheme and Thames Borough has promised £IOOO. Application will be made to both. NAPIER, This Day.

In the case in which a justice of the peace was charged at the Magistrates Court with perjury, accused made the defence that the evidence which formed the subject of the charge, referred to a time when he was intoxicated and that his evidence had been knowingly false. The magistrate in dismissing the case said he thought, however, that it was a very extraordinary thing that a person who had to get out of a serious offence like this by the defence that he was diunk and did not know what he was doing, should hold a commission of the peace, and he would have to consider seriously whether to make representations to the Department of Jnstice about the matter.
