PIAKO v. WAIPA. WIN FOR PIAKO. The first inter-union match of the season was played on the Recreation Ground, on Saturday afternoon last, when the Waipa.and Piako representatives tried conclusions. The weather although somewhat threatening in the early part of the day, cleared up during tho afternoon, and remained fine f..r the vest of the day. The Waipa team arrived by the mid-day train, and after a stroll through the Dom tin and a dip in the baths, were driven over in a four in hand to the scene nf action. Mr W. Moore, of Paeroa. had charge of the game and as usual, gave general satisfaction. When t>oth teams were lined out, the local men looked the heavier, but as play proceeded it was seen that the visitors proved too many for the local men in the scrums, indulging in ‘ screwing’ tactics to great advantage. On the whole the game uas not a good exposition of Rugby', and only occasionally did any passing take place. About 10 minutes after the game started Piako brought the ball along with s uae force, and Watpa mulling, Alf Lennard scored, the kick at goal was a failure. Waipa as awaided quite a number of free kicks from which frequent attempts were made to pilot the ball over the crossbar, but without success. Shortly after half-time McDonald was awarded a try for Waipa, Cunningham took the kick, but failed to add the major points Just before the game ended. D. Borrie scored another try for Piako, from which M. Timmins kicked a nice goal, and the game ended, Piako 8; Waipa, 3. In the evening tho visitors were entertained at a smoking concert at the Grand Hotel, and a most enjoyable time was held. The players left for home by train yesterday morning.
