Pearce, steward on the ‘Rimutaka’ alluded to in the cables, shod that he jumped overboard when the alarm was given and swam with a life buoy some l.soyds before he could find Mrs Weeks. Tho ship had gone two miles before she could be put about, and as sharks swarm in the locality, which was off Cape Yerde, grave fears were felt for the safety of the pair. When rescued, Pearce collapsed from strain of swimming and Mrs Weeks struggles. The passengers gave him £6O, and the stewards a gold watch. In Lagland he was awarded three medals by different societies.
