BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Monthly meeting of the above body took place in the Council Cha-nbers last evening.. Pr sent: His Worship the Mayor, Mr E. Gallagher (in the chair) Crs.. Edwards, O’Meagher, Wallace, Hirst, Bygrave and MillsMr F. Pavitt, engineer, was also in attendance. Minutes of special and. ordinary meetings were read and confirmed. Inward and outward correspondence dealt with. Borough Reserve-- —Prom Land and Deeds Registry Office, to tho effect that the certificate of title for tho Borough Reserve, Block 11, was now ready and would be forwarded 1 on payment of fees duo thereon, £l : 2s. Water-Rate.—Cr Hirst moved and Cr Wallace seconded that the waterrate commence Ist of next month (April).—Carried. Connecting Pipes. —Mr W. J. Litt’ejnhn- wrote asking the Council's permission to lay on connections to various houses within the Borough.. The Clerk mentioned that various householders asked permission to make their own connection®. Cr Mills moved that all. persons who have connections- laid- on bo allowed the use of the water. Seconded by Cr Wallace and carried. Water Conned ions. —Cr Mills moved and the . Mayor seconded that Messrs Littlejohn, Johns >n, Lovat', and Dudley and Chainey, be authorised by the Council to make connections. Cr Hirst thought that any person should be allowed to make his own connections if he was a competent man. Cr Wallace was also of this opin*ion. Cr O’Meagher said he thought the man that had served his time was the most capable person, and he was the proper one to do the work. Cr Mills : It will be hard for tho Council to judge who are and who are not competent persons—taking for instance new arrivals- in the district. Old Timber.—The Mayor proposed; and Cr o’Meagher seconded, that tenders be called for old tiinbor and ironwork of old bridge in Whitaker Street, returnable on Saturday next.— Carried. J. White wrote offering the sum of £1 10s for the old timber of- Whitaker Street bridge. Yard for Storage Purposes.—The Mayor proposed that a storage yard for Council’s property bo opposite Air Knock’s sample room-.—Seconded by Cr O’Meagher. Gn being put the resolution was carried unanimously.

Main Sewer.—Cr Wallace Baid he had got Mr Pavitt to measure the dis tance to continue the main-sewer from Palace Hotel to the river, and tho distance was 9£ chains. The swamp, at present used as a dumping ground for decayed vegetable ma ter of all sorts, also for emptying nightsoil, etc., etc., and it was no use leaving tho thing any longer. If a fever breaks out the Council will undoubtedly bo to blame. He proposed that the continuation of sewer pipes to river bo g me on with at once. Seconded by Cr Hirst. On beiug put, the voting resulted : For—CiS Hirst, Wallace, O’Meagher ; Against—Mayor, Crs Bygrave, Mills and E 1 wards. Waterworks.—- The C ! erk reportod that at present there was on'.y some L 263 left of loan, which would be reduced to L3O after paying outstaudin g accounts.. Soveral Councillors said it looked as if more money would have- fo> be borrowed. The Mayor said originally the waterworks were to cost L 2,600, ihoy had already spent L 3,000, —.3 • that a big mistake had been made somewhere. Finance Committee.—Resolved on motion of Cr Bygrave and seconded by Cr E Iward*, that the Mayor, Crs Hirst, Wallace and Mills be the Finance Committee. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment : J. B. Johnson, Ll 6s; P. Gilchrist, L 9 15s 9d ; Land and Deeds Office, Ll 2s; R. Michael, L 8 8s; F. Kearns, ss; F.
