A Heavy Sentence.
•«= + Auckland, March 3. “Bold” Scholfi'eld,, about thirty years of age, was charged at the Supreme Coui’t with assaulting Constable Whelan at Waihi with intent to do him bodily harm, The constable gave evidence to tho effect that prisoner sprang at him and knocked him down because witness told him he had come to serve a summons on him for assaulting a young lad. They struggled on the ground for a time, the constable endeavouring to put the handcuffs on idle-prisoner, who escaped, and before Whelan had time to rise prisoner had picked up a log of wood and knocked Whelan on the head, rendering him unconscious till next ila}'. His Honor in sentencing prisoner to ten years’ hard labour (Ihe jury, without- retiring, having found him guilty) said the prisoner was a wild and brutal creature, and he had to thank Edward Wilson for pulling him off Constable "Whelan, otherwise he would have been in the dock on a charge of murder, for -which he would assurodly have been hanged.
