THE WAR.

..... LATEST DEVELOPMENTS. Washington, May 31. Notwithstanding the report made by Admiral Schley that the Spanish squadron under Admiral Cerveras is still in the Bay of Santiago an impression prevails in America that they succeeded in making their escape from that port. ' . A reporl; is current in. Washington that four of the. Spanish fleet were in a disabled condition when they arrived at Santiago de Quba, after coaling at Martinique, and that Admiral Carveras contemplated the possibility of having certain repairs effected at Santiago before meeting the American squadrons. The approach"pf the American squadron, under Admiral Schley, however, prevented the consummation of these plans, Admiral Cerveras having been warned of the approach of the. enemy’s fleet, resolved to again put to sea, which manoeuvre it is stated he effected and escaped from the Bay of Santiago, where otherwise he would have been badly trapped. ’ ' -Mr Long, the Secretary for the Navy, on being interviewed regarding the report that Admiral Schley had informed the Government that be bad sighted the vessels of the Spanish fleet in Santiago.de Cuba, declined to either confirm or deny the rumor.
