The Population of the Australian Colonies.

Some interesting statistics concerning the population of the Australasian colonies have been [issued by Mr J. J. Fenton, the assistant Government statist. The population of the several i colonies is : Victoria 1,172,790, New South Wales 1,310,550, Queensland 478,440, South Australia 356,755, Western Australia 154,580, Tasmania 168,915, and New Zealand 721,610, exclusive of Maoris. In Victoria the number of females to every 100 males .a 97.55, in New South Wales 86.57, while in Western Australia it is only 46.70, or more than two males for every female. There are 13.38 persons to the square mile in Victoria, 4.28 in New South Wales, .72 in Queensland, .17 in Western Australia, 6.51 in Tasmania, 6.98 in New Zealand, and .94 in South Australia. During last year there were 7454 marriages in Victoria, 8810 in New South Wales, 2894 in Queensland, 1949 in South Australia, and 1695 in Western Australia. /The number of marriages in 1897 per 1000 of the population in Victoria was 6.36, in New South Wales 6.72’, and in Western Australia 10.73. New Zealand had the lowest death rate, it being 9.14 per 1000 of the population, while Western Australia had the highest, namely, 17.56 The total departure by sea in Victoria exceeded the arrivals during the year by 6454, while in Western Australia the arrivals were 22,600 more than the departures, and in New South -
