THE EAST.

The situation in the Far East continues to attract great attention in England, there being evidently a widespread impression on the public mind that Russia has scored in the Chinese game, and that England has suffered loss of prestige and material advantages. In the course of a dis eussion in the House of Commons ex pression was given to this view, but Mr Balfour appears to have made out a good case for the Government. He asserted that position was worse now than it was eight mon ks ago, that she had embittered China, and that, in consequence, England had been able to attain from Pekin ‘far reaching concessions/ With regard to Wei hai-wei, he stated that it had been leased for military purposes only.
