Burglary at Waihon.

A daring burglary was perpetrated al W aihou on Saturday night last, when Mr Hemphill’s store was broken into, and the safe abstracted. Prom what we can learn, the burglars forced the side door, and having located the safe (which -tfas a small sized one) carried it nut to the back of the premises, where they had a wheel barrow in readiness They then took the safe into an adjoining paddock, where they appear to have smashed it opened and help®d themselves to the cash contents. Mr Hemphill was staying in Te Aroha on the night in question, and was in complete ignorance of all thachad happened until Mr Pilling, of the Waihou Hotel rode in on Sunday morning, and acquainted him with the occurrence. Mr Hemphill immediately returned to Waihou, and under the guidance of the boots at the Hotel, they found the safe in a ditch, wherb it had been thrown. A fortunate circumstance was the finding in the paddock of a cheque for £6, which had evidently been dropped by the burglars in their haste. Mr Hemphill estimates that he had about £lB in the safe, so that his total loss is about £lO or £l2. The crime has evidently been the work of some one who had made themselves acquainted with the internal arrangements of. the buildings, and of the movements of Mr Hemphill. Constable Forbes has the matter in hand, and we hope he will soon be successful in capturing the perpetrators. 1
