The Greatest Seaport.
New York is the greatest seaport in the world, according to a comparative statement prepared by the New York Herald. Until recent years London did the biggest shipping business in the world, with Liverpool second, New York third, and Hamburg fourth. But early in the seventies Hamburg aud New York began to grew in importance rapidly, and now the order is New York, London, Hamburg and Liverpool. New York exceeded London in tonnage, entered and cleared last year by 5,200,190 tons. It exceeded Hamburg by 8,028,530 tons aDd Liverpool by 9,889,506 tons. Here are the offioial figures of the tonnage .entered and cleared at the four biggest ports of the world for the year 1896 : Tons.
