Several more petitions have been received in favour of the introduction of the'lrish Scripture Text Rook into the State schools. ■ John Kirby petitions for an enquiry 9 into L the cause of his dismissal as probationary liglit-keepor at Mokohinau. A petition has been received from settlers of the Whangape Block foi; Government assistance' for road construction. • . - THE BANK BILL. At half past seven to-night, the . House settled -down /to .“discuss the Bank Bill itself, instead of the method: ofy procedure, upon this important question, which had previously occupied so much time during the earlier part of the debate. Some party feeling- was introduced into the debate by one or two'members, but the House as a whole-was. evidently detennined to approach tho question from., u national standpoint. Therecanbeno doubt that ’tho.--speech of Sir I tobei’t stout did more ip allay the qne;i|iness . and suspicion felt' by a section of . the House than anything which has up ;to the present been placed before the members. His“ voice was no! once raised ; he indulged in no recriminations. and his speech was throughout calm, judicious, and reassuring. - He did not agree with all the details, of the Bill, but felt that something must be done so’prevent/actual loss to the State; in the first place, and widespread injui-y to' the commercial interests of the colony. It may now bo -regarded as certain thatvthp second reading- will be carried, though , the proposal may be- slightly modified in committee.
