‘ ‘/p ; /CRULTY TO A GIRL ' H , Napier, August 14. A case of extraordinary cruelty to a child at Ormon iville is 'reported. A girl of 13 was tied [to a bed post naked, and flogged with a lash until the blood flew all around. She escaped and informed the police. Her condition bearing out her statement, proceedings were taken against her assailant, who is either father or guardian.
TOBACCO ROBBERY Christchurch, August 15. On. the night of the 7th inst., the premises of F.“ Trent, merchant, were broken into and 280 lbs of tobacco stolen. Last night the detectives recovered nearly all the tobacco in an empty house at St. Albans, and this morning arrested two men, one on a charge of stealing it.
THE VACANT JUDGESHIP Wellington, Thursday. The latest rumour in connection with the Judgeship is that either the Minister for Labour or Mr Guinness will replace Sir Patrick Buckley in the Upper House and the Attorney-Gen-eralship should he accept the Judgeship,
