THE GAMBLING EVIL.

It is a very drastic measure, and is sure to meet;w* th. considerable opposition. It provides that if anyone, for the purpose of pro lit, sends to any person a ci’cular, advertisement, or other dopument, which invites the person receiving it to take a shave in any betting transaction, or to apply to any person with a view io ob,taiaiag information for the purpose of any bet, ho shall bo guilty of a misdemeanour and liable to imprisonment for three months, or to a nee of £J 00 or to both imprisonment and fine, aad if convicted on suminaiy couvicdon, to imprisonment for one month or to a fine of £2O, or to both, imprisonment and fiae. Ic any such document refers to anyone as a person to whom payment may be made, or from whom, information may he d’otamed in ielation to betting, such person so named shall be deemed to have sent the document, uuless he pi’oves that he was wholly ignorant of the matte. . The Eill further provides that if anyone publishes any tip, betting odds, or other information as to wagering upon any contingency whatever, he shall be guilty of misdemeanour and liable to imprisonment for one or t o a fine of £2O. The stakeholder is made responsible for the ie-nvn of the stake to any person depositing it ; irrespective of the result o? the event and no thwithsta n (ling the stake has been handed over to one of the depositors in accordance with tie terms of the Order.
