ENORMOUS COLLECTION.
NA:p>.:sr, Sunday. Last Sunday Dean Hovell reminded eke Cathedral congregation that there sti|,l remained a debt of £2OOO on the budding, the interest on which was a material drag on the annual income. He therefore asked them to make a special effort’and raise £IOOO during the week. This morning the -Cathedral was crowded by a congvega km anxious to hear the result, though few expected the amount asked for would be raised. When the Dean appeared with the large Cathedral alms dish piled with cheques; notes, gold, , silver, and copper, and announced that over £I2OO had been subscribed, there was visible emoi’on. and as the plate was deposited on the communion table the whole congregat/onrose and sung the Doxologv with thriving effect. When Dean Hovell came to Napier sixteen years ago he found. one old ; wooden church and a umb l edown parsonage heavily in debt, and a communicants’ rod of thirty. S'nee then, besides a cathedial m brick and stone costing over £lO,000, there have been built two wooden parish churches, three schoolrooms, and two large parsonages. The debt on the who l e is now less than ;‘ 300, and the com mum cants roll at the cathedral alone numbers several hundreds.
