SINGULAR OCCURENC
TWENTY-SEVEN WHALES STRANDED.
Ox Friday last Mr Moore,- who resides at Muriwai, while walking along the beach in company With a native named Winiata, near his property, discovered a number of whales stranded along the coast. On an examination being made it was found that for a distance of about two miles, no fewer than 27 of the fish were ashore, measuring in length from about 35 feet to over 50 feet. The place where the whales are ashore is near the South Kaipara Head,; the - school ’ having evidently been driven ashore by the strong westerly gale prevailing along the coast for; the past week. The fish are the sperm species and should turn out a profitable. find for the discoverers. Mr Moore is making arrangements for saving as much oil as possible, and it is understood that he , has arranged with a firm of merchants to this end- Just now is the season when whales are plentiful along the New Zealand Coast, and as during the past few years there have been no whalers cruising in these waters the whales have, had a chance to multiply. . The Cook Brothers, who are whaling at Whangamumu, near the Bay of Islands, have also been very successful so far this season, having captnred eight gosd sized whales.
