RAMPANT. TEETOTALLERS INSPECTOR BROHAM CHARGED WITH PERJURY Chbistchuech, July 1. A crowded and at times noisy meeting under the auspices of the Prohibition League was held last evening, when an address was given on the recent action of the Christchurch Licensing Committee, in renewing the license of Coker’s hotel. . Mr Taylor stated that it was , intended to lay an information against Inspector Broham for perjury alleged to have been committed in the course of his evidence in the»case. WOMEN TO THE FORE OPPOSE CAPITAL PUNISHMENT; Christchurch, July 1. At a meeting of the Canterbury Women’s Institute the following re solutions were passed:—“ That this institution is in favour of the abolition of capital punishment (1) as the State has no right to commit murder, (2) as itfhas not proved a deterrent, and that .therefore tho Minister of Justice be petitioned in the matter of the Dean case in wnich sentence of death has been passed, tho sentenced to bo commuted to imprisonment for li% ; ‘ that the Canterbury Women’s Institue earnestly desires to draw the attention of the Auckland Womens Political League to the following reasons, why the CD. Acts should be repealed, (1) because they are a glaring violation of constitutional law, (2) because they are an insult to the Women of the colony, (3) because they are useless in checking the spread of disease, (4) be cause they actually help the spread of disease by creating a false sense of security, (5) because it is immoral for the State to legalise vice, (6) because physical good cannot follow moral wrongs.
