FOOTBALL JOTTINGS .

[By Drop-Kick.] TE AROHA v. PAEROA. This game was played on Saturday afternoon last in Mr'Crosby’s paddock’ and resulted in a win for the Paeroa team by 12 points to 6. The weather was all that could be desired for football, very little wind blowing, but the ground was a bit heavy owing to the recent'heaVy rains. , The ball was not set rolling till four o’clock, . consequently the last ten minutes were played in the dark, which was very unpleasant. The teams were captained by Messrs H. Rodgers and J. Rennick, for Paeroa and Te Aroha respectively, Mr Neal acted as referee, while the lines were well looked after by Messrs F. Marshall and Shaw. •

The game was a very friendly and evenly contested one, neither side appearing to have the best of it. Both sides were in want of practice, neither appearing to play up to last years form, but I havo no doubt as the season advances the men will improve accordingly. A little more practice is required at kicking goals, as out of the 6 tries obtained, not one was concerted. ’ ■ ' ' / . Gomes' and Rennick were successful in crossing the line for To Aroha. Por Te Aroha Roto played a good serviceable,game! bat is not yet up to his old form ; Keesing proved himself well Worth his place, kicking the ball out of touch, and thereby gaining ground; Gregory, at. three-quarters, made several dashing runs. The forwards, headed by Rennick, Lewis, and Carnes, played well; and put in some useful work. The backs require more practice in stopping: rushes' as this appeared tube the weak spot of the team on Saturday. For Paeroa, Nicholls, at full, kept up. his old reputation, saving his side on occasions; Guinn played a monster game, and wa/ the lion .of the team ; Cassidy play, d a sterling game, as did also'Buck!and and Rogers.;

Paeroa y. Te Aroha.—'3rd Juniors.

The return match, between the To Aroha and Paeroa 3rd Juniors came off on the old race-rourse on Saturday last. The team picked being almost the same as that went to Paeroa some three weeks ago. The match was a very interesting one and showed that the rising generation are likely to be adopts at the game. The result being To Aroha, 16.poins, Paeroa 6. Messrs Lipsey and Morgan done the line work, while J. Maingay acted as refereo.

The team were entertained at a dinner, after which songs, etc,, were indulged in. The Paeroa boys returning home well satisfied-with the day’s • outing The Te Aroha boys played a very fair game. S. Hamilton, J Mo,on, and J. Bew were the pick of the forwards, the first two crossing the line ; H. Platt and A McKee, as halves, were worth their places, but should pass the ball more; A. B r pgi also scored two tries, playing well all through the game; W. Platt made a good three-quarter, and dropped a neat goal from the field; the full-back, T. Ellery, was very reliable. ■ Por the Paeroa boys J.. Murphy played a good forward game and was most noticeable on his side, end secured a try; Peterson and McQuarters as forwards, heading many of the. rushes, the other forwards were a bit slow in following their leaders; Pennell and Nicholl were in their proper places at at half back, and prevented thur antagonists from scoring on several occasions ; Shaw was the only threequarter that showed out; the full-back, G. Vuglar, watched the referee too much and neglected his post, once or twice getting in a H. Coran also crossed the, line. Both tries were at difficult angles and were not converted.

The following players are requested to attend a practice to be held on. the old race-course-an Thursday afternoon next, as a final selection will be made on Friday c to pick the team to play against Karangahake on Saturday at Te Aroha : Poeok, Pavitt, Clarke, Gregory, Woods, William, Keesing, Kirby, Joe, Smardon, Lewis, Eoto, Devey, Morgan, Cornes, Hinton, Me Lean, Buchan, Hamilton, Siinmonds, Beeson.
