WAIHI NOTES.

A large inflow of water took place in tli© Martha shaft ab»ut. 4 days ago. Mr James Wilson, who had the contract, for the further sinking of the shaft 80fti, has been, obliged to cease work. ;■■■■ The company will have a Tangye pump placed in position this week to' be driven by compressed air, so that probably in 10 or 12 days the shaft wiil he again clear of water. I should say that the cause of the sudden inflow would indicate either the proximity of a reef or .else hard ground. The grow d so fair has been soft picking but very heavy, making it necessary to double timber the last 40 feet; The new Engine shaft, which was let about 4. weeks ago to Messrs Sheehan and party > is going down fast, the price per foot is £2 4s, they are down now some 50 feet. The size of the shaft is 14 x 7 inside of timber. The Company have just erected a whim for the purpose of hauling the stuff to the surface. '

The erection of the new 30 head of stamps is progressing steadily, 20 head are now ready for working and as soqn as the ©levators and conveyors are completed, which will take, perhaps another fortnight, a start will be made. A portion of the remaining 10 head has not yet arrived from England, which, consists of Tappets, Oanns and Dies, "these - are steel and cannot be made in the colony. ,

Mr Barry is: well pleased with the new plant supplied "by Mr Judd, of the Thames, The self-feeders which' are somewhat complicated, being especially, well made, even better and stronger than those sent from America.

The cyanide plant is being again extended," Mr Fred Brown, who has just completed 9 more tanks, has been favored with another order from the Company for 3 ; more, so that; when these are completed there will be 35 tanks in working order, each, tank will contain 35 tons of ore. . -v‘-

Crattp Juxotiox.— -The boring operation being carried out; under the supervision of Mr J. W. Walker, is for the present at a stand still, owing to some portion of the plant requiring renewing.

JSiLVEßi'oif. —Mr H. H. Adams is vigorously pushing ahead the foundations for the new.pufnping machinery;’ The boiler and engine are both placed in position ; Mr George Given has the supervision of the stone and brick work. - , . / -

In matters local I have to report that houses in all directions are springing up like mushrooms, hardly ; a day passes but what something new strikes the eye.in the shape of a house going up, sections of land round about the aoughfc-fog, ■--- MesSrs Sanderson and Jones have made a start as Commission Argents, and are doing a good business, anything entrusted to these, gentleman will receive prompt attention.

A report of, a most extraordinary uature has just viz., that £SOOO worth of bullion has 'gone astray between Waihi ’ and Auckland, this is all I can 'say for the present, let us hope it is not true, although I .have heard men predict, that somedarin" fellows wo,uld some day act «la Dick Tur ; i i. '

The spieling in thoiving fraternity are very much in’ evidence just, now here, no less than four of the young men about hero have been eased of their hard earnings ; one of these burglars had the cook cheek to walk into a man’s room and deliberately take his purso containing £7 from his coat pocket hanging near, the sleeping man’s head. ; -. ..
