UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE.
London, March 30.
The annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge took place to-day. Oxford jumped away with the lead and kept it to the finish, winning easily by a length and a half. Time, 20min. 30sec. This makes their sixth consecutive win.
WOOL SALES
London, March 29
At the wool sales there was a good catalogue and Continental buyers were prominent Series closed firm. Best crossbred were from par to 5 per cent advance compared with the February sales. Medium and inferior merinos 74 to 10 per cent higher. Faulty scoured pieces and locks neglected and prices for them flat.
FALSE PRETENCES
Melbourne, March 30. • William Band, the claimant of the Rand estate,, has been arrested on a charge of obtaining money under the false pretence.oi being Rand’s son.
MONETARY CONFERENCE
Melbourne, March 30
The Argus suggests that if Australia is allowed more than one representative on tho Monetary-Conference the number should correspond with the relative values of the gold and silver produced in tho colonies. This would give four gold representatives to one silver .man.
THE WAR IN CHITRAL
Calcutta, April 1
Snor Afzul is ciosly investing Chitral with the Bruor Contingent:; Attacks are made on the defenders nightly. The commander of. a tribe of friendly Afghans has promised to try and get through with letters for the British Resident, Dr Robertson. The British reinforcements are expected to cross the frontier of Ohitral to-day. The Viceroy reports that the health and spirits of the troops are excellent.
FRANCE AND PARAGUAY
Paris, March 31
The French Government has withdrawn the exequaturs of the Paraguayan consuls in France, and has also ordered the withdrawal of the French consul from Asuncion, .tha capital of Paraguay.
THE MADAGASCAR WAR.
Paris, March 31
Colonel Duchesne, commander of the French troops in Madagascar, has has warned the soldiers that tho natives must be treated with clemency.
News has been received of a collision in the Strait of Messina, between the Alvah, an English steamer, and the Binkhorn, chartered by the French Government to convey troops and river gunboats to Madagascar. The Alvah sank, but all on board wore saved. The transport, though seriously damaged, managed to reach Messina.'
