Waiorongomai.
On Saturday evening asocial took place at Mr S. T. Smardon’s Waiorongomai Hotel, which was made the occasion of presenting our late teacher, Mr J. H. Gillies, with a public testimonial on the occasion of his leaving this district for Onehuuga. A number of tbe principal residents assembled to do honor to the occasion, several of whom assisted with songs aud recitations to enliven the proceedings, and altogether a mostenjoyable evening was spent. A general feeling of regret was expressed at Mr Gillies leaving this district with which he has been connected during the past five and a half years. The following is a copy of the testimonial:
“ To Mr J. H. Gillies, Head Teacher Waiorongomai Public School: We, the undersigned, Parents and Inhabitants of Waiorongomai, hereby beg to tender yon our sincere thanks for the able and efficient uiauner in which you have carried out your arduous duties as head teacher of the Waiorongomai Public School during the past live and a half years. We also take the present opportunity of expressing our regret at your leaving this district with which you have been so intimately aud favourably connected, both with the interests of the place and the advancement of the chiL dren. We have now therefore great pleasure in wishing you every success, prosperity, and advancement in your new sphere of labour, and hope your future efforts will be attended with the same success they have met with here.” Here follow forty-three signatures of local residents.-—Correspondent.
