Waitoa Road Board.

[From our own Correspondent.] The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board took place in the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Morrinsville, on Saturday last. Present: Messrs W. P.

Chepmell (chairman), E. W. Hanmer, J. Horrell, B. Pair, and J. Turnball. RoaatoPiako Native Settlement : It was shown by the correspondence submitted thot permission has now been obtained from the owners of the Maunga. teparu Block to take land for the road leading to the Piako native settlement. The Board will thu© be spared the trouble and expense of taking the land referred to under the Public Works Act. Application has been made for the Governor’s warrant to Mr F. Pavitt, of Te Aroha, the Board’s Engineer, to carry out the suryey, so that it is expected the work will soon be commenced.

3§sJohnson’s Creek Drain : Mr R. Parr, who was appointed at the last meeting of the Board to confer with Mr Thos. Taylor and other settlers re cleaning out and deepening Johnson’s creek drain, reported that Mr Mikkelsen - promised to bear the whole expense of the work through his section, and that Mr Thos. It owe promised to contribute two shillings per chain towards the cost of the woik through the section in his occupation.

It was considered that with this assistance in addition to Mr Hanmer’s offer of L 25 and the LlO promised by the Board, the work might lie done without delay, and hence tenders were callei for the work. A letter had since been received from Mr Tlios. Taylor representing that the work could not be carried out to ad van tige while there was so much water in the drain, and therefore recommending that the work be deferred till the rainy season was over.

The Board decided to defer the work dns die. Tenders : For the contract on Grattan’s Road, the following tenders were received :—Johnson and Robinson, Ll 5; Win. Thomson, Ll 3 17s; O. McCabe, Ll 1 ; Jas. Shine, L 8 4s ; Thos. Stanley, L 7 5s (accepted). Accounts : Accounts amounting to LSO 16s 4d were passed for payment.
