Mining News

KARANGAHAKE. (From our own Correspondent.)

"Woodstock United : The contractors for driving the low level are making good heudway, being in good country but very wet, which hinders shooting operations somewhat.

Moore and party (tributers in the Kenilworth section) have not yet completed the sampling of the 40 tons sold to Mr Phillips, consequently the value is not known, but is expected to he somewhere between L3O and L4O per ton. Liddell and party (tributers in the Adeline Amalgamated) cleaned up for 65 ozs. from 11£ tons, value about 50s per oz. Cones and Sheehan (tributers) are breaking out another crushing ; the stuff prospects about the same as last which was worth about Ll2 per ton. Crown : Mr McGrner has the whole of hi# staff at work on the new reef and the Battery. The reef lias been driven on a considerable distance and looks better than where it was first opened (a trial from which yielded nearly Ll 6 per ton). The whole of the ore is being saved, and is expected to be worth not less than LIU per ton all round. The Company’s Battery (after receiving a thorough overhaul) will be started on Saturday if the ‘fresh’ in the river will permit' At present the tailmce is full over the Pelton wheel. The drying furnace is now completed and found to answer very well. The dust chambers have been dene away with and hoppers placed under the mills, from which the powdered ore drops into the hags, thereby saving any shovelling. A great many other alterations and additions have been made to the plant under the supervision of Mr Hutchison, the Company’s Battery Manager. Gorge Road Deviation ;The contractors for this work expected to complete tile formation on Thursday, but now that the r&in has set in again I am afraid they will have a few slips to clear away before it cun be passed. The forthcoming elections (both Connty and Assembly) are exciting a good deul of interest in this locality. Mr Porter seems to be the favourite in this pait of the goldfield. For the County Council, there are five or six coming out for the Karangahake Ridiug, so very likely an outsider will creep in while the great guns are splitting the votes.
