TRADE WITH CALCUTTA.

These are days of keen competition, and perhaps in no department of commerce is competition more keenly felt than in the shipping trade. A new development and a new departure are the last things mentioned in circles maritime. For some time certain influential merchants in New Zealand have brought pressure bo bear on the directors of the Union Steamship Company to inaugurate aline of steamers between Calcutta and the ports of Maoriland. Within a few days arrangements have been concluded, and it is stated that the Bhundara, a powerful modern steamer of about 3,000 tons, belonging to the British-India Company, will leave Calcutta for New Zealand next month, to be followed by the Union Company’s steamer Cairn toul and other steamers in due course. Not only will this divert trade from Melbourne, but also ultimately tend to a reduction of freight. It is nob improbable (says (the Melbourne “ Herald ”) that should those steamers call at Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, the well-known firm who have built for and run in the Calcutta trade the steamers Clibus, Argus, jcc., may be compelled to make a bold bid to retain the business they have established and satisfactorily carried out by making the New Zealand ports the termini of their steamers,
