Christchurch, Monday. The weather was dull for the Canterbury jockey Club Autumn Meeting to-day. The attendance was good. The starting was bad, the Champagne Stakes being: spoiled
on account of a bad start. Results: — Christchurch Hurdles of lOOsovs; second horse, 15sovs. Two miles. Mr Markey’s blk g Little Arthur, 6yrs, 9sb 31b (Wall) ... 1 Mr Mickle’s b g Cathedral, 9st 121 b (Hobbs) 2 Mr Rutherford’s b h Ahua, aged, 13st (Lunn) 3 Royalty (9st, King) also ran. Won easily by six lengths. Time, 4min Dividends, £4 14s 6d and £5 4s 6d. The Templeton Stakes of lOOsovs, one mile, were won by Mr J. Harris’ ch g Lord Aston (McGrath), Alcinous second, and Red Ensign third. Great Autumn Stakes of 300sovs. One mile and a-half. Mr H. Lunn’s b c Merrie England, by St. George Rupee, 3yrs, 9st lib (White) 1 Mr C. Cutbs’ b m Dudu, syrs, 9sb Blb (Matthews) ... ... ... 2 Mr D. O’Brien’s be Helmsman, 3yrs, 6st (W. Holmes) 3 Rose Argent (Bsb, Brown), Wolverine (7sb 101 b, Holmes), St. James (7sfc 6lb, T. Buddicombe), and Alsace (7sb 91b, Wiaby) also started. At the fall of the flag, Alsace was the quickest away, followed by Helmsman, Wolverine, and St. James. At tho back of the course the same order was maintained, with the exception of Rose Argent, who began bo tail oIF. At the turn into the straight, Dudu ran up to the leaders and Alsace retired. Once into tho straight, White brought up Merrie England, and almost immediately having Dudu in trouble, ho won comfortably by a length, Helmsman two lengths away third, Wolverine fourth, St. James fifth. Time, 2min 38.isec. Dividends, £3 18s 6d and £4 14s. Champagne Stakes of lOsovs, with 300sovs added. For two - year - olds. Six furlongs. Mr Stead’s ch c Medallion, by Nordenfeldt—Locket, Bsb 101 b (Brown) ... 1 Mr Wilson’s b c Pygmalion, Bsb 101 b (Matthews) ... 2 Mr O’Brien’s b c Freedom, Bst 101 b (White) ... ... ... 3 Thackeray (Bst 101 b, Holmes) and Morraine (83b 101 b, Bock) also started. Mr Campbell dropped his flag bo a wretched start, Medallion getting away in front, followed by Freedom and Pygmalion at intervals, with Thackeray and Morraine last. At the top of the straight Pygmalion, who had been eight lengths behind tho leader when the field got into their strides, began bo go up. At the distance he caught Medallion, but the latter had the most left in hand, and won comfortably by a length. Time, lmin 151 sec. Dividends, £3 6s and £3 Us.
The Epsom Weiter, of lOOsovs, second horso, 15sovs, one mile and a half, fell to Leinster (Holmes); Count D’Orsay, second ; Yarra, third. Timo,2min 42see. Dividends, £7 18s 6d and £7 13s 6d. Russley Stakes of lOOsovs ; second horse* 15sovs. For maiden two-year-olds. Five furlongs. Mr D. O’Brien’s ch c Town Moor, by St. Leger—Miss Laura, Bst (White) ... 1 Mr P. Butler’s b f Lady Mab, 7sb (Ray) 2 Mr W. C. Webb’s br f Vanity, 7st
(Thomas) 3 Chabfiold (Bsb 71b), Egalite (Bsb7lb), Diadem (Bsb 51b), Carronade (Bsb 51b), Burlesque (Bsb 51b), Ben Trovato (7st 21b), and Richlake (7eb 21b), also started. Another wretched start 'saw Lady Mab first away, closely followed by Vanity, Richlake and Town Moor, the rest straggling out in Indian file. Lady Mab led into the straight and to the distance, but Town Moor coming with a rush got up, and won cleverly by a length. Timo, lmin 3sec. Dividends, £2 14s and £2 2s. The Post Stakes of 50sovs were won by Harkaway.
