Auckland, April 7. A beautiful autumn day favoured , the Auckland Racing Club for their race gathering to-day/ The attendance is large on all parts of tho course, and among the number present are visitors from Napier, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. Lord Onslow and Lady Onslow with their suite, and the Hon E. Mitchelson. and Mrs; Mitchelson drove out to the course ■ in a four-in-hand, His Excellency handling - the ribbons. The party were suitably.' received on their arrival. During the*' afternoon, the vice-regal visitors were? entertained at lunch by the Club. Mr T t McEvvin being the caterer. The Gr&iwJ Stand is gay. with bunting for tdb e occasion, and this, added to the gw en flower beds and large pot plants, t 1 na t adorn the lawn, has a most pretty o#.ect. The racing brack is in splendid orcW r for making fast time.
The principal event on the cardi i s the Easter Handicap. The first con.ceg c took place in 1874, when Mr James Wa bt won with Batter. Turquoise has. carried the highest weight to victory, in 1885 when he had 9sb in the saddl-b. The fastest official time ha 3 been regarded by L.eorina, who last year ran the mile and three-quarters in 3mia ssec, T’ois year the distance of the race has been reduced bo one mile and a half.

Also ran : Tamora, Fabulous, Doloea, Fusee, Fiesole, Ingorina, Prudence, and Te Kooti. Dollar was left at the post. This race was not started till twenty minutes to two owing to false start. All the . horses went round the course except Quadrant, who was left at the post, Loch Ness finishing in front. Mr Cutts declared that it was--no race. The horses were again marshalled, at the post. After much trouble the,field' was despatched to an uneven start, ot which., Loch Ness, Fusee, and Cissy had the best, while Dollar hung at tho post.. Loch Ness soon rushed to the front, and took command to the back of tho course, closely followed by Cissy and There was no, alteration tiy) home turn was when. She looked all over a winner, until she was opposite the Derby Stand, when Captain Russell’s mare shot out and won cleverly by a length. Time; lmin. £1 9s Gd. Rataplan was the first to draw out, followed by Hilda and Leorina, the last of the field being Raglan. When the stand was reached, Rataplan- was still in front, with Leorina second, while Taylor pulled Hilda back. Rataplan continued to lead tho field at a merrv pace round the bottom turn, Leorina and Montrose being in secondand third positions, with Patchwork and Hilda next. Near tho cutting, Montrose was nearly level with Rataplan, while Patchwork became prominent. Rataplan died away round tho top stretch, and Patchwork and Leorina ran to the front, Nearing the home turn Hilda assorted herself, and when fairly in the straight had a clear length’s lead, and coming down the straight full of running won easily by a couple of lengths. Patchwork and Leorina fought out an exciting finish for second honours, ending in favour of tho latter. Montroso was fourth, Cartridge fifth, Rataplan sixth, Raglan last. Time, 2min 39sec. Dividends : Inside, £3 Os 6d ; outside, £3 10s 6d. Hurdle Racellandicap, of lOOsovs; second horso to receive lOsove out of tho stakes. Two miles. Mr G. H. Seaweed wasquickesbtomove, but Recruit had command at tho first obstacle. Recruit continued to lead tho field, and at the turn into the straight had a length’s advantage of Parnell, but when the stand was reached there was little to choose between ths leaders, Black Joe being third, Darnley fourth, and The Colonel fifth. Rounding the bottom turn there was little alteration in places, but Recruit retired beaten at the back stretch, and Parnell took command, Donald and Darnley improving their posh tions. At tho cutting Donald ran into first place, and round the top stretch he had a two-lengths lead of Parnell and Darn,|ey. Donald held his position round the turn for home, and taking the last hurdle in the straight in Igood style, won easily by four lengths. Darnley beat Parnell by a neck for second honours ; then came Hopeful Kate and The Codonel in that order. Dick Turpin baulked •if the second obstacle. Time, 4min. Capitola was the first away, but Blarney soon took command, and holed until just inside tho straight. Octopus then assumed the lead, but half-way down the straight Nigger came with a fast run, and won by half a length. The winner was boughb in by the owner. Dividends: Inside, £3 16s •fid ; outside, £6 2s. ■Great Northern St. Legek Stakes, of 200SOVS, added to a sweepstake of lOsovs . each.
