Sydney, April 7. Magnificent weather was experienced for the opening day of the Australian Jockey Club’s Autumn Meeting, and there was a very large attbendance. Mr W. Gannon’s b h Melos, 4yrs, by Goldabrough—Melody, 9sb (Harris) ... + Chintz (Sst 21b), Antajus (Bsb 41b), and Federation (Bsb 41b) also ran. Betting : 5 to 4 against Carbine, 4 to 1 Dreadnought and Melos. From an excellent start Federation went away with the lead, with Antaeus, Chintz, Carbine, and Melos in the order named, Dreadnoughtwhippingin. This order was maintained as the field passed the standthe first time ; but at the mile post Chintz ran into second place, Melos next, and Carbine, Antieus, and Dreadnought racing together. Half a mile from home Chintz displaced Federation, bub in turn gave way to Melos, who led into the straight. Here Halos brought up Dreadnought into second place, and then Carbine challenged the leader. Melos was still in front when there was only a furlong to compass, with Car- : bine and Dreadnought on his quarters, while the others were beaten off. From this out it was a desperate race, all thre.e horses racing together, and it looked afj if . it would end in a dead heat, but CarEine, sticking to his task with great gamoness, gob up in the last stride and secured rji great victory by a nose, Melos and Drearmoughfc running a dead heat for second place.
