PONY RACING IN SYDNEY. At a general special meeting of tho members of the Australian Jockey Club to consider the advisableness of repealing some.of the’ regulations recently framed by the A.J.C. with regard to pony and galloway races, Mr F. C. Griffiths presided, and a resolution in accordance with the wishes of the requisitionists was submitted by Mr H. A. Skinner, seconded by Dr. Brownless, and supported by Messrs G. Russell-Tones, W. L, Davis, M.L.A., J. M. Toohey, M.L.A., G. B. Rowley, and others. Hon. W. A. Long, Messrs H. C. Dangar, M. Arnold, J. R. Johnson, and M. Williams wore the principal speakers against the motion, which, on a show of hands being taken, was lost by nearly a two to one majority. Pony-racing is therefore doomed in Sydney. The Hon. J. White was not present at tho meeting, but sent a letter in which he wrote “ I cannot help expressing my opinion on the subject in the hope that it may strengthen tho hands of the Committee in resisting any attempt to override the rules they have recently agreed upon. That the pony-racing which is carried on in and round Sydney is demoralising and opposed to tho best interest of the turf, I am firmly convinced, and I think all true friends of legitimate sport must hold the same opinion. When we see ponv-racing reduced to the level of footracing, by being carried on by gaslight, I think it is time for tho Committee bo step ip anti put a stop to the evils in connection with the turf proper.” BITS OF TURF. J. Rae’s first adventure on the Australian turf was not a success. Ho started his pony Ihumata at the Sydney Driving Park Meeting on the 22nd March, and ra,n second to a filly named Frolic, to, whom Ihumata conceded 131 b. The principal event at tho meeting tyas won by Pearl, owned by the ex-Aucklander, Mr M. R. Halcrow. Says a Melbourne writer :—“ Dunkeld ap pears to be beyond redemption. The party ought to be thoroughly sick of him by this, and nobody need be surprised if the brute be burned out, or, at all events, added to the list.’'’

The'Victoria Bacjag Club is a wondorful institution. Since 1884 the added money given by the Club amounts to £347,705. Mr J. Redfearn’s Miltonian won the St. Ivilda (Melbourne) Cup. The New Zealanders, Dunkeld, Audacity, Mikado 11., Tongariro, and Tartar ran unplaced. Dunkeld started favourite.

Mr D. O’Brien’s colt Whimberel, who carried his top weight so easily to the front in the Federal Stakes (Melbourne), is by St. Albans out of Curlew, by tho Marquis— Sylvia (dam of Marty,U-Honry), and was bred by Mr John Cvozier. Mr D. O’Brien gave 4gQ guineas for the colt at last year’s St, Albans yearling sale. One of Sir Thomas Elder’s recently imported English mares, Fairy Voice, by Sea Saw—Fair Vestal, has foaled a eol;t foal to Silver, a son of the vfelPkiiQ.wn English horse Sterling, A, strange spectacle was witnessed on the Bandwick racecourse one morning recently. The day broke fine and bright; about a hundred horses, with their attendants, were waiting to go on the ground, but the authorities refused to allow the tracks to bo used or the gates opened, owing to the water on the course.

Messrs Apcar and Gasper, two Indian sportsmen, who purchased the Australianbred gelding Paladin, by Kingsborough Nightshade, intend sending him bo England with the view of racing him there. Paladin, prior to his departure for India, won the Centennial Stakes, 6 furlongs, with 78b 101 b up, at the Sydney Turf Club Anniversary Meeting at Randwick, in 1 miqute, 14J seconds. : ■•••- ! . ’ ,T’ 5V "*
