WAIKATO ARCHIDIACONAL CONFERENCE.

The conference of clerical and lay members of the Church of England in the Archdeaconry of Waikato was held in the Public Hall, Katikati, on the 25th

of March. The afternoon session commenced at 3.30 p,m., when there were present : The Ven. Archdeacon Willis (in the chair), the Revs W. Katterns, and F. G. Evans, General Stoddart, Messrs Anderson, Hunter, Katterns, junr., Cox, and others. The proceedings commenced with a prayer, after which Mr E.Y. Cox was appointed secretary for the session. Apologies for the absence of several members who were unabb to attend were tendered by the Archdeacon, who thereafter introduced the first subject for discussion, viz., Almsgiving. Among the speakers who took part in the debate which followed, were the Revs Katterns and Evans, and Messrs Anderson and oox, wl q severally pointed out the neoessity for all to contribute systematically and liberally towards upholding the service of God, and to works of charity. The discussion was interesting and profitable, and, at its close a few' remarks were made by the Chairman on the subject of Unity, after which there was an adj./urnment for tea. Shortly after 7 o’clock the evening sitting commenced, when in addition to the members previously named, a numbci of local residents were present. The hymn, .‘‘Revive thy work, O Lord," was sung, and the Chairman then gave a short address explaining the objects of the conference. The Rev W m Katterns next introduced the subject for discussion at the evening session, which was “How to get all Churchmen to be Workers.” During the remarks of the Rev gentleman, and the speakers who followed him, the proceedings were enlivened by interruptions from a lay member, who loudly complained of the remissness of the clergy in not instructing the people in the canons of the church, and who persisted in making remarks in defiance of the authority of the chair. After passing the customary votes of thanks, the meeting closed a little before 10 o’clock with the Benediction.
