Mr A. F. Thompson, a Victorian sportsman j recently had a wagei with a friend as to whether the Derby was ever run in Melbourne prior to the first Champion Effakps won by Mr * W- C. Yuille’s Flying Mr Thompson backed the affirmative, and has 'hunted up tfie facts' fropi the bid “ Bell’s Life” in Victoria. The first fleshy, was run b'n November IQ, 1858 r the winnqr being Mr Thosi Austin’s Brbwnlbcki ridden by Hutton, firaf) ’Champion Stakes was run on October 1, 1859, and Harry Yeend. Sir Clarke’s prespqt timber, steered Flying Buck.
