WAGERING ON THE LOCH PLATE.
In reference to the Loch Plate, won by Carhiqp, “Asmodeous” writes: “Thewqgering was a mystery, the books at the close readily accepting offers of 4 tq 1 on Carbine, upon whom IQ or 15 to 1 at least would have been laid had the race been run in England.l’ll take £SOO to £loo,’ roared the Sydney leviathan, as he leant over the rails of the members’ reserve. Immediately he was operated upon by a wellknown medico, who ‘ puts down the pieces ’ to some tune when he has a fancy. ‘l’ll take 1,000 to 200,’ came again in stentorian tones, and a Silver King after an almost imperceptible affirmative motion of the head, might have been seen a moment afterwards booking the wager. Naturally it might have been expected that after this backers of Carbine would have had to lay longer odds on his chance of beating, his only opponents, Singapore and Fishwife, but the owner of the big voice, to the surprise of everybody, thundered forth, ‘ I’ll take 900 to 200,’ and subsequently 4tol, and even 7to 2 were accepted. The chief actor in this scene was evidently ‘on for a gamble,’ as he had always 600 to 100 to offer against Singapore.”
