Napier, March 17The concluding races of the programme resulted : Hawke’s Bay Cup, of 400sovs. One mile and three-quarters. Mr W. Somerville’s br m Hilda, 4yrs, by Musket- Ouida, Bst 91b, including 61b penalty (Taylor) 1 Mr J. Maher’s ch m Burd Helen, 4yrs, 6st 111 b (Raynor) ... ... •• 2 Mr H. Gaisford’s ch m Meta, syrs, 6st 91b (Banks) ••• 3 Whisper (Bst 31b), Patchwoik (Tst 91b), Wakatipu (7st), Fitzjames (6st 121 b), and Katinka (6st 111 b) also started. The flat* was lowered to a capital start, of which Meta had a little the best, her nearest attendants being Katinka, Whisper, and Wakatipu, with Hilda last. Whisper was quickly pulled back and Meta went on in command of Wakatipu, Katinka, and Patchwork, Hilda being in the rear. P af ; sin £ the stand, Patchwork had run up to Meta, while Katinka was going rapidly forward, and a furlong further on she had a length of Meta, next to the latter being Wakatipu and Whisper, while Hilda was now going up. At the back of the course Hilda, who was rapidly overhauling the leaders, ran into fourth place, and at the railway bend she was m front, while all the others weie being ridden, the last pair being Burd Helen and Fitzjames. Burd Helen finish -
ing with wonderful gameness, gained second place in the straight, but she could not overtake Hilda, who gained a length j verdict. Meta was a good third, Katinka fourth.
