Hastings Racecourse, March 18. The first race was half-an-hour late in starting. There was a long delay at the post and the start was a bad one. Grandstand Handicap.— Antelope, 1 ; Huerfana, 2; Strephon. 3. Eight ran. Huerfana cut out the running, but once in the straight the issue was never in doubt. Dividend, £4 5s ; time, lmin 45 2-sth sec. Hurdle Race.— The Drover, 1; Uranus 2; Raven, 3. Ten started. Uranus made his effort too late, and was beaten by Drover. Time, 4min 45see. Dividend, £ls. Cup.— Hilda, 1 ; Burd Helen, 2 ; Meta, 3. Napier, Tuesday. There was an unusually large attendance on the second day of the Jockey Club meeting. Never before was such a splendid day’s racing seen on the Hastings course. Nearly every race ended in a ding-dong finish, and neck and nose wins were the rule. The amount put through the machine was £4,728, making £10,178 in the two days. The concluding races resulted : Burke Memorial Stakes, of 200sovs. One mile and a-half. Mr J. Maher’s ch m Burd Helen, 4yrs, 7st (Raynor) 1 Mr W Somerville’s br m Hilda, 4yrs, 9st 51b 2 Mr R. Ray’s b h Wakatipu, 4yrs, Bst 111 b 3 Lenore (7sb 61b), Kotuku (6sb 91b), Cynical (6st 81b), and Meta (6st 71b) also ran. Burd Helen and Hilda were kept in the rear until the railway bend, when Burd Helen, responding: gamely to a vigorous application of the whip, assumed command. Hilda at the same time began to thread her way through the horses, and on entering the straight had gained second place ; but although she answered gamely to her rider’s call, she was unable to overtake Burd Helen, who passed the post a length in advance of Hilda. Time, 2min 39sec. Dividend, £7 13s.
