To-day a cricket match, Te Aroha v. Paeroa, takes place at Paeroa. Mr J. McNieol will hold liis nrual live stock sale at Ohaupo on Tuesday next. Mr W. S. Allen will conduct service in the Te Aroha Wesleyan Ghurch to-morrow morning at eleven o’clock. The usual outdoor services will bo held iti the D main to-morrow evening, commencing at six o'clock; Mr J. McDonnell. has been returned unopposed to the vacant seat 011 Matamata Road Board. Pjne, to-day, at noon, Mr Jas. Craig, auctioneer. See advt. The Auckland Licensing Committee elections came otf on Wednesday last, and resulted in a win for the moderate candidates.

Mr W, Meldrum, who recently commenced business ns solicitor at Te Aroha, was very fortunate on last Cour" day, being: successful in all the four cases in which he appeared. Mr M, W. D. O’Keeffe, of W.worongomai, has filed a petition to be adjudged a bankrupt. See advt. We are pleased to learn that at last the employees at the Waihi G. and S. Mining Company havo declined to go on working seven days a week. That they should have done so at ull is not creditable to themselves ; but having induced them to do so for a time, apparently the Company would like to keep them at it, like so many automatic machines. The cricket match at Te Aroha on Saturday last, Married v. Single (all local residents), resulted in a win for the bachelors by 21 runs. The following took part: Married : Messrs It. B. B. Willis, Cochrane, Hirst, Prime, Young, Harris, Beeson, Hyde, Graham, Uownes, Bygrave. Single : Messrs Meldrnm, W. Biggs. Johnson,- Simmonds, Gillies, Calderwood, Maingay, Barker, Farmer, Jansen, Sandhurst.

Mr T. W. Glover, who has recently returned from a trip to Queensland and different parts of Australia, states that rh the result of his tour, and careful enquiries made at the various places he visited, he believes that for natural resources, productiveness, magnificent climate, and freedom, Now Zealand takes the cake ; also that the average wages paid are higher in New Zealand. At the meeting of the Crown Lands Board, Auckland, on Thursday, Mr O’Donoghue, Secretary pro tern of the Waiho i Creamery Committee, applied for a site for a creamery, near iVaihou railway station. It was resolved to grant an occupation license from year to year at an annual rental of £l. Mr B. Montague applied on behalf of the Gordon Special Settlers, that certain lands adjoining the Settlement be made a timber reserve. It was resolved to temporarily reserve two fifty acre blocks.

The manager of the Marotolo G. and S. Mining Company, Mr J. H. Moore, received the following tenders for carting machinery from Thames to the site of the Company’s battery at Marototo : Per ton: Griffiths, L 5 10s; Stevern, L 4 15s; Dickey, L 3 Iss ; N. Dickey, L2 19s fid ; Itickitts (accepted), L2 17». For carting about 160 feet IQ-inch pipes, from Hikutaia to the site: Per pipe : Griffiths,Bs ; Srevern, 6s; Dickey, 5s fid ; N. Dickey, 5s ; llickitts (accepted), 4s lid. Mr J. McNicol’s great annual sheep fair will he held at Oliaupo on Thursday next, 27th inst., when about fifteen thousand sheep will be offered ; including a large number of highly bred rams, of various breeds, and also two hundred exceedingly choice stud Lincoln ewes, etc., etc. This sale will afford the best opportunity of the season to buyers to supply their wants, and to sellers to dispose of their surplus stock, as the sale is sure to attract a very large company. For particulars see advt. As reported in our columns some considerable time back, Mr Clias. Rhodes, who for a number of years past lias been Agent for the Bank of New Zealand at Paeroa, and evinced much interost in the development of the goldfields, has obtained six'month’s leave of absence for the purpose of visiting the mining districts and other parts of America, and also the Continent and Home. Ohinemuri residents determined to make Mr Rhodes a presentation prior to his leaving Paeroa, and the event came off on Saturday evening in the Paeroa Hotel, Mr J. H. Moore (Chaiimnn Ohinemuri County Council) presiding. There was a large and representative gathering on the occasion. The Chairman, in making the presentation, referred to Mr Rhodes’ career in the district, showing the good feeling existing between him and the entire community, and mentioning also the extremeusefulness displayed by him in connection with his .assaying work. Mr Moore then presented Mr Rhodes w-ilh an elegant piece of plate, a silver salver, in an elaborate morocco and satin case. The salver, which was engrayed with a suitable inscription, had been chosen by Mr J. A, Pond, of Auckland, who also wrote expressing his full sympathy with the evening’s proceedings. Mr Rhodes briefly responded in a feeling speech. Various toasts were then given, and a very pleasant evening was passed. Mr Rhodes left by yesterday morning’s train from Te Aroha.
