One of the attractions of the day is the Auckland Racing Club Jubilee Meeting, which is proceeding at Ellerslie this afternoon. There is a very large attendance. Lord Onslow, Lord Carrington, Admiral Scott and aide-de-camp, drove out in a four-in-hand. On arrival at the course they were met by the Hon. E. Mitchelson as president of the Club, Mr. K. Taylor as vice-president, and Mr Percival, secretary. The Band played “God Save the Queen ” as the-party came on the lawn. Sir John Thurston, Lady Thurston and Miss Thurston drove out in a private carnage and were suitably received. Both distinguished parties arrived in time to witness the first race. Maiden Handicap of 70sovs., second horse to receive lOsovs out of stakes. For three-year-olds and upwards. For all horses that have not won 50sovs at time of starting. Dolosa was one of the first away, and after an interesting race, she drew out in the straight, and won rather easily by a length and a-half. Time, 2min 14sec. At the word “ go,” the colours of Patchwork, Hilda, and Antelope were most prominent, and when the stand was reached Hilda had half-a-lengbh’s advantage of 'Montrose, while next in order came Patchwork, Antelope, Fabulous, Leorina, and Raglan. At the bottom turn Hilda dropped back, and Antelope assumed command. She was soon displaced by Montrose, but at the cutting Antelope again was in front. She led the field to the home turn, where Raglan came out from the ruck, and 1 coming down the straight with a long run, he gained the verdict by a couple of lengths. Leorina came fast at the finish and beat Antelope for second honours. Patchwork was fourth, Fabulous fifth, and Montrose last. Time, 2min. 428ec. Dividends : Inside, £4 2s ; outside, £4 4s.
Handicap Steeplechase of 150sovs ; second horse to receive 20sovs, and third horse lOsovs out of the stakes. About three miles and a half. Mr N. Dickey’s ch g Recruit, by Day Dawn—Stella, aged, 10s 91b (Laing)... 1 Mr J. McHugh’s blk g Messenger,, aged, lOst 61b (Collins) ... ... ... 2 Mr J. Rae’s b g Orangeman, aged, 12st 41b (Rae) ... ... ... 3 Also started : Chemist, 13st 41b (Hickey), and Takapu, lOst 71b (Johnson). Takapu and Recruit were the quickest over the first obstacle, and the pair led Orangeman up the hill, at the top of which Chemist baulked, and was not further persevered with. Takapu was in front till the sod wall was reached, whei’e Recruit took command, Orangeman being third, and Messenger fourth. Takapu soon afterwards dropped back into third place, while Recruit had a good lead, which he continued to hold. Ascending the hill for the last time, Recr ui t led Messenger by some lengths, Orangeman being third, and Takapu fourth. Through the trees Takapu made up considerable ground, but he ran oft at the top of the hill. Recruit led Messenger by five lengths as the stone wall was approached, but once in the straight, Messenger improved his position, and Recruit only had a length’s advantage at the last hurdle. A desperate race ensued home, but Messenger running unkindly when the whip was applied, suffered defeat by half a length. Orangeman, although not placed by the judge, was third. Time, Bmin. 56sec. Dividends : Inside, £G 4s 6d ; outside, £lO ss. Flying Handicap of ICOsovs. Second horse to receive lOsovs out of stakes. Six furlongs. Mr H. Harrison’s br h Raglan, 4yrs, by Cap-a-pie—Tenambra, Bst (Katterns) 1 Mr T. Page’s br m Antelope, 6yrs, Bst 121 b (Murphy) 2 Mr D. McKinnon’s blk c Lochness, 3yre, 7st 51b (Reid) 3 Also ran : —Teksum, 9st (Taylor) ; Patchwork, Bst 61b (Cook) ; Cartridge, 7st 71b (Skirving) ; Tupaki, 7st 71b (Priest) ; and Dolosa, 7st 41b (Lindsay - ). Tupaki was quickest in his stride, and he led through the cutting, followed by Patchwork and Teksum. At the home turn, Tupaki was still in front, but he soon afterwards died away, and Raglan and Antelope rushed to the front. An exciting race ensued home between the pair, but the latter had the best of it and won by a length, Lochness being the same distance behind in third place. Patchwork was fourth. Time, lmin 19sec. Dividends: Inside, £3 15s 6d ; outside, £4 10s 6d. Selling Handicap of 50sovs. The winner to be sold immediately after the race. Seven furlongs. Mr J. Rae’s ch m Prudence, by Danebury—Discretion, 4yrs, Bst (Dixon) ... 1 Mr Maitland’s br g Blarney, aged, 7st 101 b (Lindsay) 2 Also ran :—Holly, 7stslb (Fletcher), ; Premier, 6st (S.
